Arras 3.0 Beta Is Up

Arras 3

All features are in for this release cycle.

Testers Welcome!

Please Note: Though this looks much like Arras 1.x versions, and shares a lot of its code DNA with Arras 1.x versions, it is not backwards compatible with Arras 1.x in many respects.

Arras 3.0 will import many, but not all, settings from Arras 1.x versions previously installed, so if you’re upgrading from Arras 1.x expect there to be some issues in translation that will need worked out.

What’s New?

Arras 3.0 features two major changes over 1.x versions:

Responsive Layout

Responsive layout has meant major changes to the theme’s CSS. If you’ve made lots of CSS customizations in 1.x, they’re probably going to break in 3.0.

The grid now controls column widths and image sizing rather than having options for specific thumbnail sizes.

Options In the Customizer

This is a major shift in the way handles options and settings. In the long run, though, it has the advantage that child themes will be able to edit settings and add their own settings much more easily than was possible using the older WPSettings API.

Beta Means “Test”

This probably goes without saying, but while I think I’ve got it all together, there probably are some bugs in it that will need attention. So, while it’s probably OK to use this for your kicking-around blog, it’s not ready for big-time sites yet.

If you take it for a test drive and find anything that needs fixed, please open an issue on the Development repository at Github. (It’s really not hard to do, I promise!)

  1. not easy to edit css. need to open filezilla every time to edit css.

    • How were you editing css before?

    Hi Caspar,

    Thanks for the work. It does look good. I am testing it with WP 4.2, trying in the first place to make it look as close to my previous Arras (1.5.3) as possible. I’m submitting issues on github for your review.

    when the final version out !!

  4. Thanks for the work, great to see this work happening. I used arras for many years, have not yet seen another equivalent, clean grid theme. The visual design needs an update (i tried to get rid of most distracting things on my site), but the single feature I would love most is the possibility to adjust the size, spacing and padding of the grid.

  5. Hi, do you already have a planned release date? Or even an info if it will took 1 week, 4 weeks or 2 monhts to finalize the new theme?

  6. my organiztion wants each member to be able to sign on with their own unique username and password. Is this possible?

    When do you expect to have the final version? Thanks so much for doing this. I edited my css under the Appearance>Editor and all of the folders would appear, it was sometimes really hard to find which folder but I am not a super geek.

    Also would love to see comment option where you could not show “You may use these HTML tags and attributes:

    "

    Strange Chrome will not allow me to download. it says “arras.zip” is not a common download…. Im assuming it means common download from Chrome users? anyway, it has option to disregard the notice, but when I do, there is no download

    FireFox gives me problem downloading as well. but it says nothing other than ‘failed download’

    • Sorry for the trouble. Perhaps it was a temporary glitch connecting with github (where the download lives). It seems to be working.

  9. Please, update screenshot.png for 3.0 Beta!

    More: one widget disappeared for primary sidebar. That one that shows Featured posts, Tags, Comments and Last posts, all in one block. Basically a menu. Can you add it again?

  10. Language files are not working too. I downloaded pt_BR.po and .mo, place them in arras/language. Then i edited “wp_config.php” and added:

    /** WordPress Language **/
    define(‘WPLANG’, ‘pt_BR’);

    But no luck…

    Using WordPress 4.3 and Arras 3.0 beta.
