Themes that live on the WordPress.org theme repository take advantage of WordPress’s Update API. Whenever an update becomes available, users of the theme are notified within the WordPress dashboard and given the opportunity to download and install the update seamlessly.

It’s been a long time since Arras was removed from the WordPress.org theme repository. Ever since then, updating Arras has involved manually replacing the theme in the `wp-content` folder of your WordPress installation.

Over the past week, I’ve developed an Arras integration with the WP Update API that will re-implement the Update API. Though Arras will remain as an independent theme, not connected to the WordPress theme repository, it will now piggy-back on WordPress’s ability to self-update to notify, download and install theme updates.

The new auto-update functionality has been merged into the development branch and will be included in the next release. (It was not included in the recent 1.7 release.) It will not be activated by default (some people would rather not have their sites update automagically), so you’ll have to go to the Arras Options page to activate it once it becomes available.

After that, you should never have to manually update Arras again!
